RECO
REG 28 MAY 07)
LIMA,
26th January, 1907.
Sir:-
I have the honour to report that the establish-
ment of a direct steamship service between Callao
and Japan has been in active and successful operation
for some two years past, serving principally for the
transportation to Peru of Chinese coolies to work
under contract on the sugar estates.
These vessels touch at Hongkong and have lately
brought to this Coast an apparently very undesirable
class of destitute Hindoo immigrants who are or
pretend to be unable to furnish any intelligible
account of themselves.
Some twenty-five of these men recently landed
at Callao and are causing no little trouble to His
Majesty's Acting Consul General, Mr. G.G.Wilson.
Mr. Dalman, British Vice-Consul at Salaverry,
telegraphed
Sir F. Grey, Bart., M.P.
